New process for the one-step oxidative esterification of methacrolein to MMA catalyzed by gold nanoparticles
On July 27, 2020, the "New process for the one-step oxidative esterification of methacrolein to MMA catalyzed by gold nanoparticles" passed the scientific and technological achievement appraisal organized by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation in Panjin. The experts of the appraisal committee unanimously agreed that: this achievement is a domestic first, and generally reaches the international advanced level. They agreed to pass the appraisal and suggested accelerating the construction and promotion of demonstration projects.
The "New process for the one-step oxidative esterification of methacrolein to MMA catalyzed by gold nanoparticles" technology was developed by the research team of researcher Huang Jiahui at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as "Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics") through 6 years of research and development, and in close cooperation with Qingdao Sanlibenuo New Materials Co., Ltd. and the Department of Chemical Engineering, Tsinghua University. In August 2019, the construction of a 1,000-ton pilot plant was launched at the Panjin Industrial Technology Research Institute of the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics. In July of this year, the technology passed the 72-hour full-load continuous stable operation assessment organized by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation. The results showed that: the conversion rate of methacrolein was 93.2%, and the selectivity of MMA was 96.9%, meeting the expected targets.
MMA, methyl methacrylate, is an important chemical raw material and the basic raw material for organic glass, coatings, lubricant additives, and other materials. China's annual demand for MMA is nearly one million tons, with an actual output of about 700,000 tons/year. The gap is dependent on imports, especially high-end MMA products, which are highly dependent on imports. Currently, China's per capita consumption of MMA is only about 1/5 of that in Japan and the United States, and the future market demand is very large.
The "one-step oxidative esterification of methacrolein to MMA" has the advantages of short process, mild reaction conditions, no emission of toxic substances, high conversion rate and selectivity. Combined with the "ethylene hydroformylation to produce propanal" and "propanal formaldehyde aldol condensation to produce methacrolein" processes, it can form a new three-step synthesis of MMA from ethylene. This project has opened up a new way for MMA synthesis, will effectively make up for the backward status of MMA production technology in China, and has good application prospects.
This project is funded by the Strategic Priority Research Program A of the Chinese Academy of Sciences: "Key Technologies and Demonstration of Transformative Clean Energy".
